Periodic Precipitation of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks in a Gelled Medium

چکیده

Formation of spatially periodic patterns is a ubiquitous process in nature and man-made systems. Periodic precipitation the oldest type pattern formation, which formed colloid particles are self-assembled into sequence separated zones solid hydrogels. Chemical systems exhibiting mostly comprise oppositely charged inorganic ions. Here, we present new sub-group this phenomenon driven by diffusion reaction several transition metal cations (Zn2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Mn2+, Ni2+) with an organic linker (2-methylimidazole) producing zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. In some cases, crystals reached size ∼50 μm showing that gel matrix can provide optimal conditions for nucleation crystal growth. We investigated effect concentration solvent composition on morphology pattern. To support experimental observations, developed reaction–diffusion model, qualitatively describes formation.

Carbon dioxide sensitivity of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks of zinc, cobalt, and cadmium, including the framework ZIF-8 commercially sold as Basolite Z1200, exhibit surprising sensitivity to carbon dioxide under mild conditions. The frameworks chemically react with CO2 in the presence of moisture or liquid water to form carbonates. This effect, which has been previously not reported in metal-organic framework chemistry, p...

Enzyme encapsulation in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks: a comparison between controlled co-precipitation and biomimetic mineralisation.

Recent studies have demonstrated that metal-organic frameworks can be employed as protective coatings for enzymes. Two efficient strategies have been reported for the synthesis of such composite materials: biomimetic mineralisation and controlled co-precipitation using polyvinylpyrrolidone. We assessed the relative efficacy of each approach by comparing the thermal stability of encapsulated ure...

Alcohol and water adsorption in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks.

Alcohol (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol and 1-butanol) and water vapor adsorption in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8, ZIF-71 and ZIF-90) with similar crystal sizes was systematically studied. The feasibility of applying these ZIF materials to the recovery of bio-alcohols is evaluated by estimating the vapor-phase alcohol-water sorption selectivity.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks for kinetic separation of propane and propene.

Propane/propene separation by cryogenic distillation is one of the most energy and cost intensive industrial processes. Adsorptive separation is a more energy-efficient alternative. Three isostructural zinc imidazolate zeolitic framework materials are found, for the first time, to be very promising in the separation of propene and propane based on their different diffusion rates. Fine-tuning of...

Improvement of hydrothermal stability of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks.

The metal-organic framework ZIF-8, which undergoes hydrolysis under hydrothermal conditions, is endowed with high water-resistance after a shell-ligand-exchange-reaction. The stabilized ZIF-8 retains its structural characteristics with improved application performances in adsorption and membrane separation.
